Upon realizing Al and I hadn't hung out - outside of a big crew of friends - in a while, we quickly pencilled a post-work catch-up drink last week. New intriguing addresses seem to pop up daily in New York, but recently opened Lois in Alphabet City was high on our must-visit list.
It was the perfect spot for the occasion. The wine bar is intimate, with both bar and table seating, craning light fixtures hanging from the tin-tile ceiling. And the windows were swung open the night we visited, perfectly cooling the balmy late-spring evening.
Lois serves its wines on tap - an effort to keep prices accessible, wines fresh, and waste down - and a rotating menu of small plates. We obviously opted for a little cheese spread, with a carafe of crisp Katas Viura alongside.
Lois (98 Avenue C) is sandwiched between ABC Wine Co. and ABC Beer Co., where Nora and Phoebe, co-ladyowners of Lois, formerly worked. The joint is open M-F 5-12, Sat 4-12, Sun 4-11.
